about

Andy Bevan, based in Tokyo, Japan plays saxes and flutes, while Mike Bevan, from Adelaide, Australia plays electric and seven-string acoustic guitars . The title Never Too Far Away reflects the fact that we have been playing together all our adult lives, despite living on opposite sides of the globe.

Our musical journey began in our early teens when we explored the worlds of rock, blues and jazz together. Later that expanded to other genres, including Brazilian music.

Many of these influences can be heard on the album. A distinct Brazilian flavour in the compositions by three of that country’s most respected composers ¬– Guinga, Egberto Gismonti and Mauricio Carrilho ¬– is augmented with the opening bossa written for us by Adelaide singer Charmaine Jones, and two choros composed by Mike. The title track is from jazz guitarist Pat Metheny, and Andy contributes an original jazz ballad.

Over the years we have played and recorded together in numerous contexts, but this is our first formal recording as a duo. During production in Andy’s studio in Japan, we invited old friends and Tokyo-based musicians Christopher Hardy and Mark Tourian to join us on percussion and double bass.

Other friends have helped with the project. Our old mate Malcolm (Ando) Anderson captured the stories and characters of our shared history in his quirky cartoons, and fellow musician and graphic designer Karen Denardi undertook the art direction.

The music on this album is at times delicate and romantic, and at other times intricate and dramatic. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.
